National Cyclo-cross Championships 2009
Peel Park, Bradford Jan 10th & 11th
The first race of the weekend was the Veterans 50+ starting at a chilly 10.30am after a sharp overnight frost. The ground was still frozen which kept the conditions fast on a hilly course.
With a good mixture of different surfaces from smooth tarmac to rutted corners with several sharp climbs that would have been un-rideable in usual muddy conditions expected at this time of year.
The Over 50ís is split into 5 year categories although all start together.
The defending V50 champion Roy Hunt has not been fully fit recently and pulled out during the race to leave the way clear for his main rival Ian Wright (Wyre Forest) to win comfortably by over a minute.
Chasing the leading group was Dave Smith who pulled away from his bunch to gain 5th overall and the V55 title.
Slightly further behind was Vic Barnett who finished 8th overall and won the 60+ title.
Rosie Blount competed in the Youth race while her dad Chris competed in the Vet 40ís race.
Tomorrow it is the turn of Hilary Johnson in the Ladies race and with riders in 5 different classes Derby Mercury qualifies for the Club/Team championships as well.
