Young Riders Meeting

We are presently looking at ways that we can encourage young people into cycling, and specifically in to ways that we could increase the membership of Junior riders within Derby Mercury. A meeting was held to see what the concensus was within the club (the minutes of which are below).

If anyone would like to help out or get involoved in any way please feel free to contact Jim Crew.†

Who would be interested?

There is a report that some members of the BMX club wish to try road riding

It is believed that there are many children who would like to go out on a road bike but lack the means

What about the kids who get fed up on the road and want to go back?

Possible Routes

Current Tuesday/Thursday route as far as Denby as this has a good cycle way although the branches can be a bit of a problem.,

Could do the Tuesday route but do the Coxbench branch

Could do the Time trial circuit considered a bit thin.

If we took the kids time trialling we would need to put an adult at the side of them. It was thought the kids would get bored time trialling and this may put them off riding. It was felt that a group ride would be better.

The favourite was a group ride to Ambergate cafe on the first Sunday of the month with DMRC memberís children making up the starting rides to see how it would work.

Pash to organise a Sunday ride to Ambergate Cafe and back

First Sunday of every month

3

Darley Moor

There was strong feeling that this would be a very good idea. It was felt that a club based event to start would be the easiest to organise.

We could do an evening in the summer or a Sunday

Can we get Darley moor for nothing? This would gauge the interest. This leads to the road ñ road ride back from Darley Moor would be possible once we get to understand how good the kids are.

Assess the kids on Darley Moor. Nominal Payment? Charge them a few quid.

Darley Moor is a long way will the parents go?

Cyclo-cross is free for under tens and under twelveís

Have a race in the afternoon with a handicap based on a time trial in the morning. Under 10ís 3 miles time trial only. Prize for winner. Aspire to be the fastest round the track.

4

Is there a liability regarding taking kids on the road?

Council do summer holiday clubs which go on the road.

What happens if a child comes off?

We need to sort out the insurance ñ it must be possible

Matlock have an active youth section run by Don Shaw

Heanor Clarion have retired member who does the young peopleís cycling

Halesowen do a 30 mile ride for kids

Worcester or Solihull do a junior run 25 to 30 miles ñ 30 kids

It was thought that British Cycling could help with this issue

Tom to post on Veloriders to find out what other clubs do

Jim to talk to Rob Sharman

5

Derby City Centre crit ñ July 09.

Suggest having a support race for the kids. DMRC could produce cheap DMRC Tee shirts (not cycling shirts) ñ hi-viz would be preferable.

6

Go Ride

The group felt that DMRC would benefit from being a go-ride club. One of the requirements is that the club has a coach qualified to ëCore competency Bike ability level 3í ñ Tom Butcher is qualified to this level.
