Darley Moor Circuit Races

Promoted by Ashfield RC,†Week 3

3rd/4th Category Race 10.00am

A total of 7 DMRC riders made the start line for the third race in this early season series put on by Arthur Gamble & Ashfield RC. However it is fair to say that for four of us (Pete Turner, Dave Luscombe, Dave Barber & Stuart ) it was more of an opportunity to saviour the atmosphere and experience of a large (120+) peloton under racing conditions.

Some personal comments on this yearís race.

It was cold! But never mind, this made it fast as well and, given the choice between frosty hard surfaces or deep mud, Iím sure 99% would go for the hard.

Dave Smith wins V55 National Cyclo-cross

National Cyclo-cross Championships 2009
Peel Park, Bradford Jan 10th & 11th

The first race of the weekend was the Veterans 50+ starting at a chilly 10.30am after a sharp overnight frost. The ground was still frozen which kept the conditions fast on a hilly course.

With a good mixture of different surfaces from smooth tarmac to rutted corners with several sharp climbs that would have been un-rideable in usual muddy conditions expected at this time of year.

The Over 50ís is split into 5 year categories although all start together.

Mud - Noun
Wet, soft earth or earthy matter

I understand that the Inuit language has up to 17 different words for snow and I am beginning to wonder whether the English language fully covers the variety of mud that can be encountered on a cyclocross race.

Midland Cyclocross Championships : Thornbridge

(incorporating NDCXL Round 12)

Derby Mercury rider Dave Smith retained his Veteran 50+ championship on a frosty course at Thornbridge Outdoor Centre last Sunday.

The ground was still frozen after a sharp overnight frost for the early races making some of the corners† treacherous† although the straights were faster on the harder surface.
