A full field started this event along the rolling 66 mile circuit, part of which is to be included in this years forthcoming Tour of Britain. Although the weather was warm, a fast pace was maintained with the usual breaks taking place from the start and at the back, a few riders were also packing it in straight away after finding the pace too hot.
When the last lap started, there was an 11 man breakaway that had a lead of 1 minute 40 seconds and then shortly before the finish, Duncan Putman got away to record a solo victory for his Derby Mercury team. He was duly congratulated by fellow riders although he modestly put the victory down to the help from his team mate Andrew Young.
