Re:Alport Challenge 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
My SRM power meter stats from my ride are attached in the picture.

Average Power 309W
Normalised Power 325W

Weight was about 65kg (10.2 stone)

Time 20.54s

Alport is a difficult climb to average a high power output on. There is quite a bit of cornering and downhill when you're not pedalling. This is reflected between the difference between the normalised and average power results. Hence normalise power is a better representation in this case of what you need to be producing when you're actually pushing on the pedals.

Therefore an 11 stone rider would need to produce Normalised Power of 350W to get under 21 mins or average power of 340W

(11/10.2)*325 = 350W

(11/10.2)*309 = 340W

My ride was done on a still night, so if the wind is right it could be done using significantly less power.

I'll have a go again soon,

Cheers,

Duncan

Re:Alport Challenge 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Just for comparison, I managed to extract the ascent from Duffield up to Alport from the Saturday chain gang that I mentioned. I had to take the finish from where my speed picked up over the top, but it should be reasonably accurate. In my defence I had been on the front quite a lot up to the bottom of the climb!

Interval Name: Alport Challenge
Duration: 23:38
Distance (miles): 6.3
Work (kJ): 452
Average Power (watts): 319
xPower (watts): 330
Max Power (watts): 699
Average Heart Rate (bpm): 171
95% Heart Rate (bpm) : 180
Average Cadence (rpm): 73
Average Speed (mph): 16.0

xPower is what my analysis software calls normalised power (I think). I am about 88 or 89kg (13st12) so although I average a bit more power than Duncan, I'm giving away 23kg or so (assuming our bikes etc. weigh a similar amount) with obvious results with respect to the time!
I did wonder whether it was best to burn a few matches to stay with the bunch on the initial climb as there is a flattish section but in this case I decided to ride up at my own tempo as I was a bit cooked from doing hard turns up to Duffield so it's effectively an individual time trial effort.
Right, now where did I put that Rasmussen diet book?

Duncan / John,

Thanks for being so open with the data.

My estimates are based on average gradient and speed. Due to the climb being so uneven with much steeper gradients some flats and down hills more power is needed, which is what I thought, but did not know for sure.

Now I know I produce more power than my estimates which has cheered me up somewhat.

As your data shows, it is the power to weight ratio which really counts. Not much hope for me up Alport with my limited power and 13st 2lbs weight.

Looks like I will be buying a Power Meter for my Birthday.

No problem Trev, I'm glad it has given you some encouragement. Right, back to figuring out how to lose 20kg so I can keep Duncan in sight.

Careful with that though, John.

I've dropped about 3-4kg since last year (on average) and have noticed the difference in my flat efforts. I feel much better in a group and up a hill, but TT riding? It's the same as it was last year, when I'd expect it to have improved. My running however was an instant transformation

Cheers for the numbers, chaps. Very nice.

Trev - You can rent from cyclepowermeters before you buy. They offer a large range, too.

Duncan/John - You read the Hunter Allen book?

Your TTs are pan flat though aren't they Thomas ? Be interesting to see how you go round something like Long Lane compared to last year. I'm a stone heavier than when I first joined the club - 13st now compared to 12 st then (mainly due to me training for marathons back then) and I wouldn't mind splitting the difference and getting back to 12.5

How have you lost weight Thomas - given you didn't have a lot of extra to lose in the first place - any strategy or was it just cut out beer and biscuits ?

Had a pop at this tonight but it went a bit pear shaped in the legs department, more a high intensity Alport recce.

FYI the road has been resurfaced at the bottom end and there are still some loose stones about (though its not too bad).
